Prenatal Alcohol Exposure: Effects on Brain Structure and Function
ثبت نشده
چکیده
285 Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), a devastating developmental disorder resulting from heavy maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy, was first identified in France in 1968 (Lemoine et al. 1968) and in the United States in 1973 (Jones et al. 1973). FAS can be readily diagnosed shortly after birth when characteristic facial features and growth retardation are present, coupled with known prenatal alcohol exposure. Not as obvious at birth—but with more serious, pervasive, and lifelong consequences—are the effects of alcohol-induced damage to the developing brain and spinal cord, or central nervous system (CNS). Problems that become apparent later include reductions in general intellectual functioning and academic skills as well as deficits in verbal learning, spatial memory and reasoning, reaction time, balance, and other cognitive and motor skills. Some deficits, like problems with social functioning, appear to worsen as these individuals reach adolescence and adulthood, possibly leading to an increased rate of mental health disorders.

Review of Current Neuroimaging Studies of the Effects of Prenatal Drug Exposure: Brain Structure and Function
Neuroimaging tools have provided novel methods for understanding the impact of prenatal drug exposure on brain structure and function and its relation to develop‐ ment and behavior. Information gained from neuroimaging studies allows for the investigation of how prenatal drug exposure alters the typical developmental trajecto‐ ry. The current prevalence and characteristics of prenatal drug expo...
متن کاملExecutive function and cortical thickness in youths prenatally exposed to cocaine, alcohol and tobacco
Small and detrimental, albeit inconsistent, effects of prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) during early childhood have been reported. The teratogenic effects of prenatal alcohol (PAE) and tobacco exposure (PTE) on neurobehavior are more firmly established than PCE. We tested if co-exposure to all three drugs could be related to greater differences in brain structure than exposure to cocaine alone. ...
متن کاملA tensor-based morphometry analysis of regional differences in brain volume in relation to prenatal alcohol exposure
Reductions in brain volumes represent a neurobiological signature of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Less clear is how regional brain tissue reductions differ after normalizing for brain size differences linked with FASD and whether these profiles can predict the degree of prenatal exposure to alcohol. To examine associations of regional brain tissue excesses/deficits with degree of pr...
متن کاملFrontostriatal connectivity in children during working memory and the effects of prenatal methamphetamine, alcohol, and polydrug exposure.
Various abnormalities in frontal and striatal regions have been reported in children with prenatal alcohol and/or methamphetamine exposure. In a recent fMRI study, we observed a correlation between accuracy on a working-memory task and functional activation in the putamen in children with prenatal methamphetamine and polydrug exposure. Because the putamen is part of the corticostriatal motor lo...

INTRODUCTION The teratogenic effects of alcohol on the developing brain have been known for over thirty years [1-3]. During this period, a host of neuropsychological and behavioral deficits associated with prenatal alcohol exposure have been identified and have helped to increase awareness of this public health concern. Although a limited number of autopsy studies have been competed, it was not...
متن کاملImpact of Prenatal and Subsequent Adult Alcohol Exposure on Pro-Inflammatory Cytokine Expression in Brain Regions Necessary for Simple Recognition Memory
Microglia, the immune cells of the brain, are important and necessary for appropriate neural development; however, activation of microglia, concomitant with increased levels of secreted immune molecules during brain development, can leave the brain susceptible to certain long-term changes in immune function associated with neurological and developmental disorders. One mechanism by which microgl...
